Till now, there has been mainly two kinds of CAN products available on the open market,
CAN chips and CAN development tools. Using these
two kinds of products, companies have developed in-house (in general not for the open
market) CAN modules for different tasks. For example CAN modules are not uncommon in
automatic brake and anti-spin systems. Now this situation begins to change, so that many
companies are now occupied with the task to add a layer on top of those products.
A growing generation of open market CAN products consists mainly of two kinds of
products. The first kind is CAN modules
that are able to communicate with other modules available on the open market. A
requirement is that they are using the same HLP or that the modules are able to coexist
with modules using an another HLP. The other kind of products is CAN design tools. Those are used as an aid when
designing modules and systems so that they meet the HLP standards and perform the
communication and error handling (apart from the basic CAN protocol error handling) in a
correct way. Design tools may also be an aid when evaluating system performances, such as
meeting real-time requirements.
CAN chips:
here are reasonably up-to-date lists of the CAN chips in the market today.
