This month sees Kvaser unveil a new CAN bus datalogger, Memorator Light. Designed for troubleshooting any CAN-based system, Memorator Light is an easy-to-use tool for logging serial data without preconfiguration or software setup. Many of our customers will already be familiar with Memorator or Memorator Professional, both CAN dataloggers that double as USBcan interfaces. Memorator Light is a ‘stripped down’ version, ideal for situations when there’s an occasional need to gather diagnostics-related information, such as when a control system intermittently misbehaves. Notably, Memorator and Memorator Professional offer extensive configurability and are better suited to an R&D environment. Memorator Light can be left plugged into any CAN system, so that when a fault condition arises, it records what happens just before and after the problem occurs. Like other members of the Memorator family, the messages registered are held in a circular buffer where the oldest data is overwritten when the buffer becomes full. A second circular buffer records 1000 messages before and after an error frame occurs. This device has 1 GByte of built-in memory. To access stored data, Memorator Light is connected to a PC via the USB 2.0 interface and the Memorator Light Extraction Software, which comes as part of the package, enables data to be downloaded quickly and simply, in a variety of popular file formats. For maximum ease of use, Memorator Light has an inbuilt autobaud function that automatically determines the bit rate. The device supports both 11-bit (CAN 2.0A) and 29-bit (CAN 2.0B active) identifiers, and bit rates from 10 Kbit/sec up to 1 Mbit/sec. Lightweight and easy-to-handle, it is capable of operating in the -40oC to 85oC temperature range, enabling it to be used in factory automation, automotive, marine, medical applications and beyond.
