Problem

I can't replace Vectorīs CANcardX drivers with my LAPcan driver! (I have problem with Navigator and other KVASER software but everything else works fine...)

Solution

1. Open the Control Panel. (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel).
2. Click the CAN hardware icon.
3. Mark the LAPcan and click the Diagnostics button.

If you can see that a CancardX driver is started the re-installation of the LAPcan driver didn't work out as i was supposed to do! (You should receive "LAPcan driver (v6.2.xx ( - "date" -  "time" ) started" and NOT "vcanx started"-information!) . If this Driverstatus window is blank then just plug out the LAPcan card and plug it in again (this information is only showed once by a number of good reasons) This can happen if the CANcardX drivers where not installed in a "standardized way" (and therefore not removed properly), but the following instructions will handle the problem:

1. Follow the instructions how to uninstall the LAPcan (the procedure is exactly the same as for CANcardX). Click here for instructions!

2. Here come the "trick"; sometimes the CANcardX drivers are installed not in the predefined directories for drivers by various reasons. The important file here i vcanx.sys (causes the trouble) supplied by Vector which MUST BE REMOVED totaly from the harddisk. Later during installation Vectors "vcanx.sys" will be replaced by the "vcanx.sys" supplied by Kvaser - they have the same name (by histrorical reasons) but the "vcanx.sys" you find in the installation package from Kvaser is a bit more optimized for KVASER software.) Note that all your Vector tools should run with the KVASER LAPcan driver, and if not, please contact support@kvaser.se with as much details as possible.

Windows instructions:

Click Start-meny ->  Serach -> For files or folders.

In the field "Search for files or folders named:" you type: "vcanx.sys". Let the "search util" serach your whole harddisk to make sure that "vcanx.sys" is not somewhere on your harddisk.

---

Command prompts instructions:

Type "dir /s vcanx.sys c:\" (or d:\ or e:\ depending on which harddisk you have installed Windows).

Let this dir.exe attribute search your whole harddisk to be sure that that "vcanx.sys" is not somewhere where on you harddisk.

---

If it the "vcanx.sys" is found there is a significant risc that Windows (98 most likely) uses the wrong one (i.e. the "vcanx.sys" supplied by Vector) If you find this file and you're absoltley sure that it is not Kvasersīs "vcanx.sys"- delete it!  (If you have already unpacked the drivers (from Kvaser) the search util will find this file in that directory where you unpacked the CANlib driver package and should not be deleted)

3. Install the LAPcan driver. Click here for instructions!
