Kvaser announces strategic partnership with Synective Labs to commercialize CAN FD IP

Leading Controller Area Network (CAN) interface specialist, Kvaser AB, is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Synective Labs AB (Gothenburg, Sweden) to commercialise Kvaser’s CAN with Flexible Data-Rate (CAN FD) and CAN 2.0 IP.

A complete set of IP blocks for CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) has been developed by Kvaser, primarily for integration into its own FPGAs. By partnering with Synective Labs, Kvaser’s IP modules will be made available for FPGA and ASICs for any non-strategic customers.

In June 2015, ISO approved ISO 11898-1:2015, the document that specifies the Classical CAN and CAN FD protocols. Whilst yet to be published in its final form, Kvaser’s CAN FD implementation complies with both the latest proposed standard for CAN FD 1.0 and the CAN 2.0 standard. Synective ensures compatibility with the final version of the CAN FD standard (ISO11898) once it becomes available.

Kvaser’s CAN FD block has been designed with the following features:

  • Small size
  • Low-latency DMA
  • Highly configurable
  • Status updates in the data stream
  • Easy integration

This IP implementation supports CAN FD bit-rates up to 13 Mbit/s with 40MHz clock frequency.
The IP block is delivered with a system bus interface for easy integration, though it is also possible to use simply the internal core logic without buffers and with a simple interface to achieve minimal frame size.
