Introducing an ideal pairing for CAN & LIN bus development

19/05/2020 by Kvaser

K2L’s OptoLyzer® Studio software has been extended to work with the Kvaser Hybrid 2xCAN/LIN interface, among other Kvaser devices.

The latest version of K2L-branded OptoLyzer® Studio (OLS V1.7.1) now supports the Kvaser Hybrid 2xCAN/LIN, Kvaser Hybrid Pro 2xCAN/LIN, USBcan Pro 2xHS v2, Leaf Light HS v2, Leaf Pro HS v2 and Leaf Professional LIN, adding to existing support for Kvaser’s Leaf CAN to USB range.

OptoLyzer® Studio is used throughout the development cycle for test, simulation, analysis and verification of all automotive and industrial networks, including CAN, CAN FD, FlexRay, LIN and MOST. Pairing OptoLyzer Studio software with Kvaser’s flexible Hybrid 2xCAN/LIN interface achieves a capable, cost-effective solution for CAN, CAN FD and LIN bus testing.

For Kvaser’s customers, K2L’s software comes in two main variants: OptoLyzer® Studio Foundation CL for customers that don’t need code generation; and OptoLyzer® Studio Professional for those that do. The OptoLyzer® Studio offers to customers a dual environment: A Graphical User Interface (GUI) with multi-monitor support for easy operation execution and a framework that can be used to write hardware specific scripts via .NET accessing all the supported hardware types. A runtime edition is also available for customers with large test benches that are running code that has already been generated with the Professional edition.

Like Kvaser, K2L has an open and flexible business model that favours third-party support. As Carmelo De Mola, Sales & Marketing Manager for the K2L brand (which is owned by Microchip) comments:

Kvaser Hybrid 2xCAN/LIN

“Kvaser and K2L product users can profit from the flexibility of combining products from both vendors depending on their requirements. I see Kvaser’s interfaces as highly complementary to K2L’s ones. K2L’s OptoLyzer® MOCCA hardware has been developed for automotive applications, so that, for example, it is possible to synchronize different MOCCAs for the simultaneous analysis of all common automotive bus systems like CAN, CAN FD, FlexRay, LIN and MOST®; whilst Kvaser Interfaces are more general-purpose and dedicated to applications for CAN, CAN-FD, LIN.”

Adds De Mola:

“OptoLyzer® Studio software can use standard formats for saving trace data, so that it is possible to exchange them with tools from other vendors. All the features of the combined product solution provided by Kvaser and K2L is a crucial competitive advantage and unique to the market.”

Specific features for CAN, CAN-FD & LIN

Support within OptoLyzer® Studio for CAN and CAN-FD is strong, with the latter benefiting from both ASC and BLF log file compatibility. Catalog support is available as well with DBC, LDF, ARXML formats handling. Several higher layer protocols are integrated in the software, and handling of unsupported protocols can be achieved by executing the user’s code implementation as an external script.

Please note that OptoLyzer® Studio supports LIN version 2.x, not LIN version 1.x.  LIN version 2.x has been adopted widely by automotive OEMs, whilst LIN version 1.x is mainly relevant to those maintaining existing systems, which is why the Kvaser Hybrid 2xCAN/LIN Kvaser Hybrid Pro 2xCAN/LIN & Kvaser Leaf Professional LIN support both versions.

OptoLyzer® Studio provides identical functionality for Kvaser devices as K2L’s own hardware, excepting functions that are based on MOCCA hardware-specific features such as relay control. Users can find an overview of the CAN, CAN-FD and LIN features in OptoLyzer® Studio here, but examples include online/offline analysis, catalog support for message disassembling, message filtering, CAN reply, support of various file formats for saving trace data, and data recording.

The number of CAN and LIN channels supported within the software at one time depends on the number of channels supported by the connected hardware interface, multiplied by the number of hardware interfaces supported in parallel. K2L in-house tests[1] suggest that a maximum of six hardware interfaces can be connected at the same time without any kind of side effects.

Pricing & Availability

Pricing for OptoLyzer® Studio Foundation CL is competitive. Please contact K2L directly for details.

Notes De Mola:

“Different users can share an OptoLyzer® Studio license (i.e. not concurrently, or not at the same time), allowing entire teams to use the software at a competitive price.”

He adds:

“Professional customer support service is included in the initial purchase price. It includes updates and application support. There’s no annual renewal, and the support remains valid for as long as the product is available.”
