Removing the LAPcan/PCcan driver

Important Note:

The following text describes how to remove the LAPcan (PCcan) device driver if the normal means of uninstalling them fails. You should exercise utmost care when you remove system files and registry entries. One mistake might be enough to render your system useless, and the only remedy might be to reinstall Windows.

If you remove system files and/or edit the registry, you are doing so at your own risk.

Windows 95/98:

Step 1 and 2 below are all that is usually needed to remove the drivers. Step 3 - 6 can be necessary under certain circumstances (such as crashes during setup and similar events)

  1. Go to the Control Panel, System icon, Device Manager tab:
Click on each PCcan/LAPcan instance and click Remove.
  2. Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs:
Click on "Remove LAPcan Driver" and/or "Remove PCcan Driver".
  3. Caution! Remove driver files (if present):
    \windows\system\vcand.vxd
    \windows\system\vcancard.vxd
    \windows\system\vcanconf.exe
\windows\system\vcancpa.cpl (make sure the Control Panel is not open)
    \windows\system\kvacancf.exe
    \windows\system\kvapccx.vxd
    \windows\system\kvalapw.dll
\windows\system\kvacancf.cpl (make sure the Control Panel is not open)
    \windows\system\canlib32.dll
    \windows\system\vcndrvms.dll
    \windows\inf\kvaser.inf
    \windows\inf\kvalap.inf
    \windows\inf\kvapcc.inf
  4. Caution! For Windows 95a only: using e.g. notepad, examine the contents of
    \windows\inf\OEM*.*
and remove those originating from KVASER (look at the copyright statement in the beginning of the file)
  5. Caution! For Windows 95b and Windows 98 only: remove any file in
    \windows\inf\Other
    whose name contains "kvaser".
  6. Caution! Remove Registry Entries (if present):
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\CanDevices (Remove the whole key)
HKLM\Software\KVASER AB\CANLIB32 (Remove the whole key)
    HKLM\Software\VECTOR (Remove the whole key)
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SetupX\INF\OEM Name (Remove certain values containing KVASER)
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Kvaser {PCcan, LAPcan} Driver (Remove the whole key(s))

Windows NT 4.0:

Step 1 below is usually enough to remove the driver. Perform steps 2 - 5 only if step 1 fails.

  1. Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs:
Click on "Remove LAPcan Driver" and/or "Remove PCcan Driver". An uninstall program should start and remove all traces of the driver.
  2. The installation program placed some programs in c:\kvaser\lapcan (\kvaser\pccan) unless you selected another directory. If you can find a program there named lapcfg.exe (for LAPcan, or pcccfg.exe for PCcan), run it like this: "lapcfg -silent remove"
  3. Caution! Remove driver files (if present):
    \winnt\system32\drivers\kvalaps.sys
    \winnt\system32\canlib32.dll
    \winnt\system32\kvalapw.dll
    \winnt\system32\kvacancf.dll
\winnt\system32\kvacancf.cpl (make sure the Control Panel is not open)
    \winnt\system32\vcanconf.exe
    \winnt\system32\vcndrvms.dll
\winnt\system32\vcancpa.cpl (make sure the Control Panel is not open)
  4. Caution! The installation program placed some programs in c:\kvaser\lapcan (\kvaser\pccan) unless you selected another directory. Remove these files.
  5. Caution! Remove Registry Entries (if present):
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vcannt (Remove the whole key)
HKLM\Software\KVASER AB\CANLIB32 (Remove the whole key)
    HKLM\Software\VECTOR (Remove the whole key)
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Kvaser {PCcan, LAPcan} Driver (Remove the whole key(s))
